Keeping Our Kids Safe at School

More Scenarios

Narrator

Okay. Let’s look at some more scenarios.

Valerie

…Guys! Guys! Look...Jill posted Raymond and Gary’s ‘wall-to-wall! They’re so gay!

Carla

Oh my gawd! That’s disgusting! They’re talking like they’re boyfriend and boyfriend!

Jacky

Let me see that!

O-M-G Gary, you the hottest guy in the school! I know! LOL! When are they going to get married? They’re so gay! I’m Raymond! I’m Gary! Let’s dance! Whoo!

Valerie

I’m so going to post this online!

Jacky

Yeah! For the whole school to see…

Supervisor

Sit down please. May I have that?

Where did you get this?

This is a conversation between two people and neither one of them is here.

Carla

Thank God they’re not. They’re disgusting.

Supervisor

Listen, I don’t know if this is true, but I do know that what you’re doing is wrong. It’s a form of discrimination and harassment. The way you’re acting and speaking is showing disrespect for the feelings and choices of others.

We don’t tolerate that at this school - our Code of Conduct is very clear, and it includes respect for all groups and individuals. You kids ought to think about that.

Principal

Thanks Robert for talking to the kids who were passing this around and reporting the posting incident. You’re right – it does look like a clear type of cyber bullying or harassment and that would explain why Raymond and Gary have been absent from school for the past few days. Thanks Robert. I’ll get your confirmation form back to you. As soon as I’ve had a chance to investigate and to find out what needs to be done about the students who posted this on the internet.

Supervisor

Okay Michelle. Thanks. I’ll talk to you later.

Principal

Thanks.

Narrator

When a report is filed, the principal- after completing an investigation and determining outcomes - will complete an acknowledgment form and give it to the employee who reported the incident.

If it’s deemed that harm was caused to the student victim, the principal must also notify his or her parents, unless it is decided that doing so would cause the victim further harm.

It is also imperative that supports be put in place for the student victim.

Sherri

Stop!

Edward

School girls gone wild!

Sherri

Jerks!

Paul

Look at her face.

Edward

Look at her hair.

Paul

It’s so weird.

Bye!

Bus Driver

Boys. Whose camera is it?

Paul

Mine.

Bus Driver

What you were doing back there, is totally inappropriate. Delete the video.

Edward

We didn’t record anything – we were just teasing.

Paul

You can check it.

Bus Driver

You both should know that it’s the Board’s policy that I report any form of harassment to the Principal. The next time I catch either of you doing something like this, that’s what I’ll have to do. Try to make better choices.

Narrator

If this board has not listed harassment as an offense that may lead to suspension (as a “local” addition to the Ministry’s list), the bus driver’s actions were appropriate.

If, however, the board has added harassment to the list (as is suggested by the driver’s words), then the driver is not meeting the requirement to report.

Ricky

And that’s how my family celebrates special occasions like weddings and birthdays.

Does anyone have any questions?

Stephanie?

Stephanie

Do you ever wish you could celebrate your birthday in your home country?

Teacher

Thank you Ricky, for a fascinating speech. Let’s move on to our last speaker for the day. Michelle, that’s you.

Before we begin, it’s important to remember that it’s never easy to get in front of a group of your peers and present something. It’s our job to make this classroom a safe place, where every student feels accepted and respected.

Michelle, what’s your speech topic?

Michelle

My speech topic is about my parents’ immigration to Canada in the 1990’s.

Teacher

Perfect.

Michelle

It was winter of 1998. My father just found out that his company was moving to Canada, and so he packed up me, my little brother and mom...
